U.S. Space Force taps Rocket Lab for $266m missile testing deal

Rocket Lab Corporation, the publicly traded space company known primarily for its small satellite launch vehicles, announced a $266 million multi-launch contract with the U.S. Space Force, the branch of the Department of War responsible for military operations in and through space, marking the largest single launch agreement the company has ever secured.

The deal runs through the Space Force’s Space Systems Command, the organization that develops, acquires, and fields the equipment the Space Force needs for national security missions, working specifically through its Rocket Systems Launch Program, an office that exists to buy fast, flexible launch services for suborbital missions rather than the larger, more expensive orbital launches that typically put full satellites into space. Under the contract, Rocket Lab will execute 12 suborbital launches, with an option for up to six additional launches beyond that, giving the Space Force room to scale the program up if early flights go well. A suborbital launch sends a payload high enough to briefly leave the bulk of the atmosphere without achieving the speed needed to enter a stable orbit around Earth, a profile commonly used for missile defense testing because it closely mimics the trajectory of an actual ballistic missile without the cost and complexity of a full orbital mission.

The Space Force’s use of the Rocket Systems Launch Program specifically for missile defense-related work has a long history, and suborbital launch vehicles have served for decades as the primary tool the Department of War uses to test interceptor systems, sensors, and tracking technology against realistic missile-like flight paths before those systems ever get certified for operational use. Rocket Lab’s own chief executive tied the contract directly to that mission when discussing the award.

Beck’s reference to cadence points to one of the defining shifts happening across the entire launch industry over the past decade. Where the Department of War once relied almost exclusively on a small number of massive, expensive rockets launched infrequently, the Pentagon has increasingly pushed toward smaller, cheaper vehicles capable of flying far more often, a shift driven partly by the recognition that a resilient missile defense and space architecture needs the ability to launch quickly and repeatedly rather than depending on a handful of high-value, hard-to-replace missions. Rocket Lab has built its entire business model around that kind of high-frequency launch capability, flying its Electron rocket dozens of times since the vehicle’s debut in 2018 and establishing itself as one of the most active small-launch providers in the world, a track record that likely factored heavily into the Space Force’s decision to hand the company its largest contract to date.

Most of the 12 confirmed launches, along with any additional flights exercised under the contract’s option, will fly out of a new Rocket Lab location at the Pacific Spaceport Complex-Alaska in Kodiak, Alaska, a launch site the company has not previously used for its primary operations. That Alaska site adds a fourth launch location to Rocket Lab’s existing network, which already includes Launch Complex 1 in New Zealand, the company’s original launch site, along with Launch Complex 2 and Launch Complex 3, both located in Virginia. Geography plays a direct role in why Kodiak makes sense for this kind of mission, since its high-latitude location and clear flight paths over the Pacific Ocean have made it a longstanding site for suborbital missile defense testing, offering trajectories and downrange safety corridors that are harder to replicate from launch sites closer to populated areas on the U.S. mainland.

Rocket Lab said the first launch under the new contract is expected no earlier than the end of 2026, giving the company several months to prepare the Kodiak site and integrate whatever specific payloads the Space Force plans to fly on these missions. Neither Rocket Lab nor the Space Force has publicly detailed exactly what those payloads will be, leaving unanswered exactly which missile defense systems, sensors, or interceptor technologies this contract will help test and validate over the life of the agreement.
