Polestar Australia has confirmed the mysterious “new variant” of Polestar 4 teased last month will arrive in local showrooms either very late this year or early in 2027.
Speaking with CarExpert at the Australian debut of the new Polestar 5 electric GT, Polestar Australia managing director Scott Maynard said the new model – which combines “the space of an estate and the versatility of an SUV with the dynamic performance that is Polestar” – could land Down Under by the end of this year.
“The variant of Polestar 4 that was spoken about by [Polestar global CEO] Michael Lohscheller in the February strategy statement is likely to break cover before the end of this year – it will be touch and go on whether we land those vehicles in Q4 2026 or Q1 2027,” Mr Maynard said.

“They’re currently scheduled [to reach Australia] in December, but I would expect… that they could spill into 2027.”
Based on the brand’s current top-seller, the ‘more versatile’ Polestar 4 variant is expected to intersect the station wagon and SUV worlds, and based on the teaser image will add a conventional rear window instead of the existing windowless rear design that relies on HD cameras for rearward vision.
“With this car, Polestar will once again set new standards. Sweden is famous for its estate cars, and its SUVs are world-class. We are combining the space of an estate and the versatility of an SUV with the dynamic performance that is Polestar,” said Michael Lohscheller, Polestar CEO at last month’s event.
The new Polestar 4 variant was teased alongside the next-generation Polestar 2 and all-new Polestar 7 compact SUV, both of which are due in the next 18 months and form a core part of the brand’s product offensive alongside the 4.
Spy images published to Chinese social media platform Weibo, and shared on Reddit, give us a better view of the as-yet-unnamed Polestar 4 variant, which has a more conventional SUV silhouette than the existing fastback-style mid-size SUV.
Apart from the more upright rear and its window, the new Polestar 4 variant otherwise looks very similar to its coupe-style SUV sibling, with a similar belt line and full-width rear light bar.
The new variant is the next cab off the rank in the Geely-owned Swedish brand’s global product rollout, following the all-new Polestar 5 flagship which debuted in Australia this week, ahead of deliveries commencing “early in the second half” of 2026.
Last year Polestar registered 2373 new vehicles in Australia, a solid 38.5 per cent increase on 2024. For context, however, the Chinese-backed Swedish EV specialist did about one-tenth of Tesla’s volume in Australia.
Leading the charge was the quirky Polestar 4 coupe SUV – infamous for its lack of rear windscreen – which returned 1295 deliveries. It was a wide gap then to the ageing Polestar 2 mid-size liftback (746) and then the larger Polestar 3 SUV (332).
The brand’s local boss hopes for modest but sustained growth through this year, helped by the release of the all-new Polestar 5 flagship GT shortly after mid-year ticks over.
Further volume is expected from the three new models that will follow in 2027 through to 2028.
