When MTV debuted “The Osbournes” in March 2002, viewers weren’t sure what to expect from the heavy metal legend and his chaotic household. What they got was pure, unfiltered gold.

Ozzy Osbourne, once known solely as the wild frontman of Black Sabbath, was suddenly the bewildered, mumbling patriarch in fuzzy slippers, trying to wrangle his opinionated wife Sharon and their rebellious teens, Kelly and Jack. It was a cultural reset.

At a time when reality television was still in its infancy, “The Osbournes” shattered the mold.

There were no competition eliminations, no prize money, no glossy filters, just the messy, hilarious, and deeply human reality of a rock star family trying to navigate domestic life. But at the core of it all was Ozzy, often confused, always entertaining, and completely real.

While “The Osbournes” catapulted Ozzy and his family into a new kind of fame, the heavy metal legend later revealed that the reality TV hit took a serious toll on his mental health, calling it one of the “worst decisions” of his life.

In a 2022 interview with Metal Hammer, Ozzy admitted that signing on for the MTV show was financially tempting, but emotionally draining.

“All I can say to you is this. If someone offers you a sh-tload of dough to be on television, you’d have to be a mug to turn it down,” he said. “I thought it was gonna be a piece of cake. But you have a camera crew living in your house for three years and see how you feel at the end of it. You feel like a f-cking laboratory rat.”

Premiering in 2002, “The Osbournes” followed Ozzy, Sharon, Jack, and Kelly as they navigated their chaotic home life, dogs barking, teen drama, and all, in what became MTV’s highest-rated show at the time. But behind the expletive-filled hilarity, Ozzy was crumbling.

“It got to the point where I was falling apart emotionally,” he confessed. “You can’t f-cking relax. It doesn’t matter where you go for a piss, you’re paranoid there’s a camera in there.”

Despite the stress, Ozzy acknowledged the show’s undeniable cultural impact, even if he wanted no part in doing it again. “Would I do it again? It’s now Kardashianville. The world’s changed, man.”

Though he had regrets, The Osbournes gave fans an unfiltered look at the man behind the music, and in doing so, it helped redefine what reality TV could be, paving the way for every celebrity family series that followed.
