Is this the right time for a “right-sized” commercial van?
After a five-model-year hiatus, the ProMaster City is returning to the Ram truck brand’s commercial-vehicle portfolio. The redesigned van is coming online for the 2027 model year in cargo and passenger configurations with an estimated base price parent-company Stellantis says will be, “…the lowest cost of acquisition in the commercial-van segment.”

Design and Capability
The redesigned ProMaster City is significantly larger than its predecessor, measuring nearly 7 inches longer in wheelbase (the distance between the front and rear axles) and nearly 2 feet longer overall. Height is less than 80 inches, meaning the van should easily fit in most standard residential garages and urban parking structures. Exterior styling bears more than a passing resemblance to the Mercedes-Benz Metris, a similar-purpose commercial van that was sold in the United States and Canada from 2015-2023. While it has a passenger-side sliding door as you would expect, somewhat strangely, no such thing exists for the driver side, not even as an option.
The interior is all-business as you would expect. Passenger configurations offer seating for up to five or eight, depending on whether buyers elect for two or three rows. Cargo versions offer a maximum capacity exceeding 167 cubic feet with a 111-inch load floor and 48 inches between the rear wheel wells. Maximum payload and towing capacities are approximately 2,000 pounds each, and the company says two standard US pallets can fit front to back.

Engines
Like its predecessor, the 2027 Ram ProMaster City uses a front-wheel-drive design. A 1.6-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder producing 166 horsepower and 221 pound-feet of torque and an 8-speed automatic transmission is the sole powertrain offering. A full suite of driver-assistance features is standard along with drowsy-driver alert, hill-start assist, rear-obstacle detection, and a programmable speed limiter.
Standard Equipment
Other standard equipment includes heated front seats and a digital rearview mirror that uses a camera to project a clear picture if the back windows are obstructed by cargo. Upgrading from the base Tradesman trim to the uplevel SLT adds front-obstacle detection and a wireless phone charger.
Pricing and availability
Final pricing for the 2027 Ram ProMaster City will be announced closer to the vehicle’s on-sale date in the latter half of 2026. Stellantis is targeting a base MSRP of less than $40,000. Assembly for US and Canadian models will take place in Turkey.
CG Says:
Stellantis is pitching the 2027 Ram ProMaster City as a “right-sized” option for commercial vehicle buyers, and based on this initial report, we think they’ve nailed it. This vehicle will fill a desperately needed vacancy in the market for businesses that neither want nor need the capability and expense of a beefier rig such as the Ford Transit or Mercedes-Benz Sprinter.
