Review
The subcompact crossover segment is among the newer vehicle categories available to American shoppers, and among the most affordable. As the U.S. market is now completely bereft of cars smaller than, say, a Toyota Corolla, it is the small crossover that serves as shoppers’ de facto “entry-level” new ride of choice.

Cheap Cars are Gone
That last sub-$20,000 vehicle offered in America, the Nissan Versa small sedan, was built (in Mexico) earlier this year. That model has been discontinued in this market.
That said, most of the crossovers in this segment hardy qualify as entry level—this in terms of amenities, or price. Most are quite nice, and cost quite a bit more than $20,000.

Affordable Crossover Shopping
Having recently shopped with my daughter for a new small crossover, this author can attest to the generally upscale feel of most of the vehicles in this class, and, unfortunately, the upscale price. You can read about my daughter’s car shopping experience here.
Price and Practicality

Chevrolet’s least-expensive model for 2026, the Trax commands attention as a small crossover for a number of reasons, two of which are price and practicality, though the most-affordable Chevy crossover earns points for style and design as well.
Chevrolet Trailblazer
Chevy actually sells two crossover priced and sized in the lineup below the popular compact Equinox. Also offered is the Trailblazer, which is positioned slightly upmarket of Trax, and can be had with AWD, which the Trax cannot.
Trax Prices and Trim Levels

For 2026, the Trax is offered five trim levels:
- LS ($23,495)
- 1RS ($24,995)
- LT ($24,995)
- 2RS ($27,195)
- ACTIV ($27,195)
Rising through the lineup, the LS is the entry-level Trax offering, while 1RS and 2RS models feature sportier exterior and cabin trim. The LT boasts a cleaner look, with an emphasis on luxury. Finally, the ACTIV goes for a rugged presence with rugged-looking black-finish wheels and trim-level specific body trim.
Tariff Pressure

Note that, despite tariff pressure, Chevy has done a commendable job keeping Trax prices reasonable. Built in South Korea, the Trax is subject to a 15-percent import tax. Regardless of the added cost, the base price of the Trax, including destination charge, has only risen $2000 since its 2024 introduction. That said, future price increases may be in the works.
Engines
All Trax models are powered by a 137-horsepower 2.3-liter 3-cylinder engine mated to a 6-speed automatic transmission. As noted earlier, the Trax comes only with front-wheel drive, unlike the more-expensive Trailblazer, which is offered with AWD as well.
Test Car
Consumer Guide recently spent a week behind the wheel of a 2026 Trax ACTIV in Cacti Green. With the Sunroof Package and Driver Confidence Package our test car came to $28,385 including destination charge.
Room and Comfort

Though sleek in profile, the Trax has a more upright stance than many of the vehicles in the subcompact crossover category, and as a result offers owners class-leading passenger and cargo space. There is plenty of room for four larger adults, with almost 26 cubic feet of cargo space aft of the 2nd-row seats.
The cabin is otherwise pleasant. Chevy has a nice job finishing the cab in upscale looking trim, though there’s plenty of hard plastic just under the bright bits. But, at this price, we think the Trax interior comes off as both attractive and functional.
Controls
Though not on a contiguous plane as in many newer models, the Trax’s instrument panel and center console are large and easy to read. And, very much to our liking, climate functions are handled via real knobs and switches located on a panel below the center-console touchscreen.
Ride and Handling
Where the Trax truly shines, even surprises, is underway. While there is only an adequate amount of power (more on that in a moment), Chevy’s small crossovers rides and handles like a much more expensive vehicle.
There is a general sportiness to the Trax underway, with a good amount of steering feel, well controlled lean in corners, and brakes that feel firm and strong. Ride quality is also commendable. On the highway the Trax feels like a larger, heavier vehicle, and feels solid and planted on the road. That cabin is quiet, too, at cruising speed, with little road noise filtering into the cabin.
Power and Performance

There’s decent power for around town jaunts, with the Trax serving up relatively quick squirts away from a stop, and plenty of quick-maneuvering muscle for filling gaps in traffic. Try as it might, however, the little 3-cylinder engine delivers only adequate passing and merging thrust, coming up short against most of the other vehicles in this class, especially turbocharged versions of Mazda’s excellent CX-30.
The engine is also a little crude in action. At idle, and while accelerating, the Trax powerplant is prone to throb, and generally noisy operation. Fortunately, both the sound and quaking dissipate quickly at constant speeds.
Fuel Economy
One the plus side, our test car achieved just better than 30 mpg during our evaluation, this despite frigid temps and extending warmup idle times.
Value
There is an awful lot here to like for first-time car shoppers, or adults looking to downsize their motor pools. The Trax delivers big on comfort and utility, and offers up excellent fuel economy and a very attractive price to boot. Shoppers looking for AWD and a little more power will want to check out the similarly compelling Chevrolet Trailblazer. We also recommend the stylish and feature-packed Nissan Kicks.
But for $30,000, it’s hard to fault the Trax. It’s easy to own, and, it’s the only small crossover available in Cacti Green. (Click here to check out all of our subcompact crossover recommendations.)
